Wahoo Hunt

Back in January I had the privilege to go spearfishing with underwater cameraman and shark expert Mark Rackley. The water was pretty cold for the FL Keys so we were both wearing 5mm wetsuits with hoods. We anchored up in 60ft of water on the edge of the reef and started chumming. Immideatley after we had six large Bull sharks all around us. Mark was able to get some amazing up close shots of these highly aggressive sharks.

After about an hour in the water I heard mark yell from behind me "WAHOO!".So I grabbed my Riffe gun as fast as possible and swam towards Mark. As he pointed into the abyss three 40lb wahoo swimming right at us materialized. I had been in such a rush to get on the boat that day i forgot a piece of rope to tie to the back of my gun to clip my float line to,so i clipped it to the ring on the front of my gun. This meant i had to have one hand holding the floatline out of my way when i dove down. Anyway when the fish came into view I took a deep breath and dove down slowly and b lined for the closet fish. I waited till it started to turn and swim away and took a long shot. My shaft stuck the fish right behind the head and spined it. As i paused and waited for the fish to run and start ripping my flotline from my hand all i saw was the fish rollover. I realized i stoned the wahoo cold and swam to grab it before the bullsharks under me got to it. Unbelievable Mark got the entire sequence on video from over my shoulder. Look to see it in his new DVD "Livin II" coming this fall!
